Hello and welcome to the Homeopath in Your Pocket, where I help busy working mums discover how to support their family's health with confidence. Hi, I'm your host, Neela Prabhu, a licensed homeopath with 20 years of experience as a pharmacist. As a mum of two girls, I totally understand the juggle of family life firsthand. Each week I'll share practical, actionable tips that you can use today to support your family's well-being. So let's get started. Safe, effective solutions for the whole family. It might be Easter holidays now, but when they go back to school, uh-oh, are they itching? It's headlights again. So today I'm going to be covering everything you need to know about headlights, what they are, how they spread, natural treatments that actually work, so that headlights don't have to be a complete nightmare. So what are headlights? They're a parasitic infection of the scalp. And the scientific name is Pediculus humanus capitus. They live in the hair close to the scalp and they bite and feed on the host. That's us. And the biting causes the scalp to be itchy. You can sometimes also feel them crawling around, which is a horrible sensation. You can look for them at the nape of the neck because children often scratch here, also behind the ears, and these areas can appear red from the biting. So we've got some facts here about headlights. Number one, they can't jump or fly, they're spread by head-to-head contact only. They may be hugging their friends at school or having some play dates, and that's how they transfer. Number two, they like clean hair. It's an old myth that only if you have dirty hair you get headlights. It's completely wrong. Headlights prefer clean hair, and long or short, it doesn't matter. Number three, they can't live off the body for more than 24 hours. So you don't need to wash everything or worry about soft furnishings, it's just focusing on treating the person's head and not the house. And number four, as we said before, they're spread by direct head-to-head contact. Children hugging and playing. That's how they spread. So, how do we get on top of an infestation? So, weekly checking is recommended. So you can make a routine of it. So, if they're having a bath on a Sunday night, then it's a good habit to get into. So you don't have to wait until the child complains of itching or you see them or redness, because by then the infestation is often a lot of the questions. If you want to dive deeper, book a free discovery call to see how we can work together one-to-one, or join me on Instagram at Homeopathic Harmony, where we can continue the conversation.
